Studio Workshop for PHOTOGRAPHERS

February 16th-18th 2008

"Secrets of the Studio & Lighting Techniques!"

This stop in our Workshop Series is designed to bring digital photographers into a working Photography Studio here at Chandler Studios. Earlier in the series students have learned how to use their cameras and how to move their images into and through a digital workflow. Now the workshop challenges Photographers to bring all that you have learned into a Studio environment. You will begin to learn all about what it necessary to set up your Studio and Lighting in a working professional environment. Our Lessons Learned and "Hands-On" techniques have proven themselves to be valuable for amateur and professional photographers alike. (The only difference is the PRO gets paid for their mistakes!) You will actively work in our Studio with models that can give you instant feedback on your efforts. Here you can learn and then immediately see the results of your imaging efforts. All lights, backdrops, strobes, reflectors, digital darkroom, and studios await you!

Here is a look at what you will be doing at
Chandler Studios!

For more information call us 910 324 1646. It is always more fun to talk to someone but the remainder of this page will outline our Goals and Objectives for this great weekend of Photography Fun.

Friday evening: 6 pm. We invite you to join us for an Ice Breaker at Chandler Studios. We will help you arrange lodging at any of several hotels or B&Bs that are near to the Studios. (Please note students, with our assistance, will arrange their own lodging). Directions and maps to our Studios in Eastern Carolina will be provided.

Saturday:

Morning:
9 am. Morning presentations till 11 am.
1. Introducing you to the elements of the Studio; lights, action and a camera! You will learn about main lights, diffusers, snoots, chosing backdrops, reflectivity, using a hand held light meter and more......
2. Then we move forward with an overview of a Digital Workflow that will help you gain the feedback that you need in the Studio.

11:45 am. We have lunch catered into the Studio.

Afternoon:
1 pm We introduce you to the models you will be working with for the weekend and get and idea of how you want to capture your weekend portfolio. Here we begin with the basics of how to guide your subject into an effective pose. We present you with what we think is an effective guide for posing and then you go to work with camera in hand. We support you by gaffing the set and keeping you engaged with your model for the afternoon. You will work in teams of two for the afternoon.

4 pm. We break from the shoot and download for a critique of your first day's efforts. Here we emphasize what you are doing correctly and how you can make it even better. The models will comment on your ability to engage and guide them. It is important to know what to do, but even more important to learn how to tell your subject what you want them to do so you can get their best image.

5 pm. Review and wrap up from our first day.

7 pm. Steak cookout on the deck. Our suggested time is 7 pm but we are flexible. We are hosting this dinner as a "Welcome (for some), or Welcome back to Chandler Studios!"

Sunday:

8am. The classroom opens an hour early for students who would like some one-on-one time to discuss questions or challenges they may be having.

9am.
We go right back in the studio for a bit of lecture focused at how to calculate for effective flash photography and how best to use a hand held light meter for both flash or constant lighting set ups. Both type kits will be used. One studio will be flash while another with be constant lighting. (I like both).

10am. Back to work with your models, but this time you will be working both indoors and outdoors with available light, fill flash, or constant lighting. Your team will rotate among four challenging situations created to help you learn to use light effectively and consistently.

Lunch 11:45 Once again lunch will be catered in for our dining pleasure.

1pm. Team rotations continue throughout the afternoon working indoors and outdoors (in our garden area).

4pm. We conduct a RAW Workshop in the Studios. You will be picking up your camera for the first time since Friday morning and capturing images in the RAW format. We will teach you the benefits and drawbacks of using the RAW format.

Saturday evening. Dinner. Students choose where we shall dine.

Monday

8 am. The Studios are open so students can begin polishing their Portfolios for presentations at 10am. Students are expected to be able to explain all the steps they took while producing their Portfolio. Each student is expected to present six photos using indoor lighting, outdoor lighting, flash, and continuous lights.

10 am. Begin review and critique of student Portfolios.

12 pm Workshop ends.
